2013 NASCAR League Final Results: Rasta Racing is Champion!!!

Congratulations to 2013 NASCAR League Champion Rasta Racing!  Fat Penguin takes 2nd and Skidmarks is 3rd.  The Chase goes to Asleep at the Wheel!

I must apologize once more for my late post, but I have an excuse that is not work/travel related this time.... I have been on an alcohol induced bender since Sunday after watching Greg f***ing Biffle (who I normally like) fall to 24th while Clint f****ing Bowyer (who I also normally like) steadily gain spots to finish 5th at Homestead.

I wish that were true... I am actually happy I held on to 2nd for the second year in a row.

The League:

What a great comeback and season by Rasta.  Remember the Tony Stewart pick in week 1?  Rasta has been as low as 12th place this year and as many as 60 points out of 1st place.  Starting after the second Daytona race, Rasta flexed his muscles as a top contender steadily climbing up the leaderboard.  All in all, he spent 19 of the 36 races in the top three spots including 14 of the last 15 races.  He also spent 4 weeks at number 1.  Of the top 3 teams this was the least number of weeks at number 1 (Penguin 12 and Skidmarks 11), but he was there for the most important one... by one point.  Well done Rasta!  You are now 1600 Chips richer!

Penguin's season has been well documented as I have most likely bored you guys with my random thoughts and rants throughout the season.  As I said earlier, I am proud to have finished 2nd two years in a row.  I have had an awesome year as commissioner and have been happy to have been a top contender this year...  17 of 36 races in one of the top 3 spots, and 12 weeks at number 1 (including 9 of the last 11 races).  I was able to come back from dropping to 10th place and as much as 75 points back... so that was pretty cool.  12 weeks at number 1 and missing the trophy by one point is a little disappointing, but as my wife told me when I was trying to gain "special condolence favors" from her after losing my grip on the title, "All you are doing is picking a driver and hoping for luck, so get over it..."  Gotta love those Jersey girls.  I am now 800 chips richer.

Skidmarks had an incredible season.  Our most consistent team by far spending 30 of 36 races in one of the top 3 spots!  He had an amazing 11 weeks at number one, he was never lower than 5th place, and he was never more than 46 points out of 1st place all year.  Although his reign at the top was during the middle of the season, he was always within striking distance of the lead and finished just 8 points out of 1st.  Great job Skidmarks and congratulations for an awesome season!  You are now 350 chips richer.

The Chase:

Our Chase winner, Asleep at the Wheel, dominated the Chase.  The nearest contender was Piston Pumpin' Racing by 27 points.  Other than the second week of the Chase (Kiss the Wall and Fat Penguin led him by 6 points), he led every week of the Chase.  1st, 17th, 1st, 1st, 5th, 2nd, 4th, 4th, 9th, 4th were his finishes.   That was an impressive finish for sure... he actually jumped up from 15th place to 9th in the overall standings as well.  Congratulations Asleep!  You are now 250 chips richer.

Honorable Mentions:

Could Have Been a Contender Award(s): for those spent a little time at number one, but ultimately finished out of the chips:
  • 4th place team, Dr. Beef Motorsports, just missed finishing in the chips by 18 points and was only 26 points from finishing 1st.  Beef spent 8 weeks in one of the top 2 spots (he was never in 3rd); including 3 consecutive weeks at number 1.  The Chase was not his friend however.  He fell out of the top spots starting in Chicago and never came back.
  • 6th Place team, Graziano Motorsports, had a strong year as well.  10 weeks in one of the top spots including the 3rd Place Spot for two consecutive weeks of the Chase with 3 races to go.  His two weeks at number one were prior to the Chase and were 10 weeks apart.  Although finishing 6th, he was a top 5 team for 29 of the last 30 races.
  • 11th place team, Rusty Truck, started strong.  He spent the first 11 weeks in the top 3; including an impressive 7 weeks at number 1.  A series of BSOTWs and Paul Menard took the ex-commissioner down.

The Dos Equis Most Interesting Team Owner in the World Award:
  • Shepard Racing - Although he finished in 16th, Shepard submitted pics from Races and Vacation Spots it seemed almost every week.

Best Pick Submission Award:

  • Chonk Motorsports - Although there were many contenders for this award, Chonk wins running away.   Email subjects like: Chonkianapolis, Chonktins Glen, Chonkstol, Chonklanta, Chonkagoland, New Chonkshire, Chonker, Chonksas, Chonklotte, Chonkinsville, Chonknix, Chonkstead... were always amusing.  He guaranteed a BSOTW with his Kurt Busch submission in the 1st Texas race... 37th BTW.  I could go on, but the award winning submission came last week with his Homestead pick.  I never replied, but I definitely changed my mind regarding the BSOTW in Phoenix:  (George, I hope I have permission to post this...)

Chonkstead

Martin Truex, #56

I have to disagree with the BSOTW last race.  Clearly, if your chosen driver won the spring race and is leading with two laps to go in the fall race and then runs out of gas, he is the instant poster child for bed sh*tting.

So, with all due respect to Denny who started on the front row and slowly leaked feces onto the mattress the entire race which culminated in his 28th place finish, that has been his year since his accident.  When I think of bed sh*tting, I think of an all out instant and unexpected exiting of bowels which both shocks and disgusts.  Carl Edwards accomplished that feat and to not acknowledge those efforts is both a travesty and an insult to all of the BSers that xame before him.

By the way, I'm really impressed with your level of Nascar acumen.  You're a true redneck...you finding this sport is like an eskimo discovering skiing.

Thanks for running the league...loved all the comments, pictures, insights, and you were really funny (no offense Goodman).

Until Next Year, CHEERS!!!!!

Phoenix Results... Harvick Rules Hamlin Fools...

Well, well, well... while the NASCAR Chase and our Chase may be a foregone conclusion... the League is still very much up in the air.  Skidmarks, with his 1st place Harvick pick is back in hunt for the top spot!  Skid moves from 3rd to 2nd and more importantly only 11 points back; Skid has been at or near the top all season long and still a strong favorite to take this thing.  Kurt Busch, Newman, Burton, ??? Who will be the right pick for this Sunday?

Asleep continues an impressive Chase run with the 9th place Logano pick.  Asleep has only one pick outside the top 10 for the entire Chase thus far... Piston took 20th place Bowyer giving Asleep a 31 point lead in the Chase.  Piston has an outside chance for the Chase but it is slim.  Skidmarks and Penguin are still alive but only in theory.

Rusty had a nice top 5 pick of Kurt Busch taking over the 13th spot from neighbor Chonk by 4 points... which leads me to question if there might be a little side action going on at this point.  Can I get in on that one fellas???   Anyone else have side action???

BSOTW honors go to Penguin, Rasta, Graziano, and Empty with the 28th Hamlin pick.  This has definitely made things more interesting at the top.  Dropping Rasta from 2nd to 3rd and bringing Skidmarks 11 points closer as previously mentioned... and possibly taking Graziano out of the money barring a huge points swing at Homestead.  Piston is still not eliminated from the overall competition, but the chance is slim at this point.

So, Homestead this week... I tried to get my wife to head down to Miami to watch the race and sun the ta tas down on South Beach, but she gave me the GFY look... even though I mentioned we could hit Doral for a nice 18 holes and possibly Scarlette's, Cheetah's, Tootsie's, etc. which is really entertainment for the whole family.  This would actually be a nice League Road Trip next year if someone wants to pull that together.  Why wouldn't we do that??????

Sooooo... how will our league play out???

I'm pretty much limited to Newman or Biffle ... maybe Martin, McMurray, Menard... WhoTF knows at this point???
Skidmarks has Kurt Busch, Newman, Burton, ???
Rasta has Bowyer or Newman... maybe McMurray or Menard... He's still very much in this thing as well.

I'm thinking we should all take Newman which would give Beef a chance to take Kahne and sneak back in the money...

Anyway... whatever the scenario; good luck to all!

Cheers!

Texas Results: Johnson Dominates; Jr., Kenseth, and Kahne not too bad either...

Sorry for the late post again... and my apologies to Gordon for hoping he would take the Chase this year.  Penguin took 1st place Johnson to take an 18 point lead with two races left and no drivers left to pick.  Rasta falls out of the tie for the top spot with his 14th place Truex Jr. pick.  However, Skidmarks moves into the 3rd money spot with his Truex Jr. pick.  Beef passes Graziano with his 13th place Kyle Busch pick and Graziano falls out of the money spot with the BSOTW Gordon pick (38th).

Asleep continues his solid Chase run with 4th place Kenseth pick, while Piston keeps slowly gaining ground.  This week they took 2nd place Dale Jr. to move within 19.

So two races left... Phoenix tomorrow and Homestead next week.  Penguin (yes I am speaking in the third person) has Newman, Biffle, and maybe Hamlin who is showing some signs of being the driver he once was. Asleep has a few more options: Logano, Edwards, Truex Jr. to protect the Chase lead.
I know everyone is in the same boat, but the decisions made for the next two races will be critical as still nothing has been determined.

I still have the question on how far back can one come to take one of the top spots.  Can Empty still take 3rd?  If Piston made a run for the 3rd spot, could they also take the Chase?  Who knows if any of the possible scenarios in my mind will play out.  All I know is I do not feel comfortable with my 18 point lead and still feel that there is a lot of work left to do... and possibly a little praying.

Cheers!

Martinsville Results... NASCAR Chase is tied and so is the League

For me personally, this NASCAR season could not be any better.  Not just because I am tied for the lead in the League with 3 races to go... we'll get to that.  I got married to a girl who enjoys NASCAR.  I think her brother will be joining the league next year... which makes it totally worth it.  The competition in NASCAR has been awesome.  Johnson and Kenseth tied for the lead with Gordon, Harvick, and Kyle Busch within a double BSOTW from the lead.  I find myself pulling for Gordon to pull it out and get a little retro as I was not watching NASCAR when he was winning championships back in the day.  So what if he got in the Chase with a little controversy... it's all about which team is stepping up at the end of the year, and Gordon's team definitely is.  Should they expand the teams allowed in the Chase like they have in every other sport?  I think this year poses that argument... plus we wouldn't have to worry about the BS that went on in Richmond.  16 teams in the Chase?  Someone please tell me why not...

Anyhoo... Sorry for the late post, but here goes.

Chonk and Dust took race winner Gordon.  Empty took 2nd place Kenseth.  Penguin, now tied for the top spot, took 3rd place Bowyer.  Beef and Chase leader Asleep took 4th place Keselowski.  Rowdy and co-league leader Rasta took 5th place Johnson.... Rasta only 25pts back of the Chase as well.  Now 3rd place team Graziano, Pursuit, and Piston (Only 20pts out of the Chase) took 7th place Hamlin and Rusty took 10th place McMurray to round out the top 10 for the race.  BSOTW honors go to Shepard with the Newman pick.

3 to go!  Good luck in Texas tomorrow teams!  Yee Haw!

Talladega Results... New League Leader Rasta!

Rasta has taken the lead with his 2nd Place Jr. pick.  Asleep still in the Chase lead chose Jr as well.  Piston moves within 18 points of the Chase lead with their 1st Place McMurray pick.  Penguin drops out of 1st place with the 16th place Logano pick.  Graziano takes the 3rd Spot with the 12th Place Harvick pick, while Skidmarks drops to 4th with his 21st place Burton pick.  There was no real BSOTW One in this race, but Skidmarks as mentioned above with Burton and Rusty with 22nd place Almirola will take the honors this week.

Talladega was expected to shake up the standings and it did not disappoint.  We had movement in 7 of the 8 top spots in the league.  The Chase is still being led by Asleep, but with 4 races to go, there are 4 teams with a good chance of taking the prize... maybe more if the leaders stumble.

As for the big prize... it's still wide open with 4 teams within 27 points of the lead.

With just a handful of drivers left to choose, are you able to pair them with the right race?  From how far back can you come to still factor in this thing?  I guess we'll find out... All I know is that my rock, paper, scissors strategy has failed the last two races.

Good luck in Martinsville everyone... especially Fat Penguin.

Cheers!

Charlotte Results... Kahne is Top Pick

We are 5 races into the Chase and nothing has been decided.  14 points separate the top 4 spots and there are 6 teams within 25 points for the Chase Prize.

2nd place Kahne was picked by Skid, Graziano, Dust and Pursuit.  Skidmarks moves from 3rd to 2nd this week and only 7 points out of the top spot.  Skidmarks (-15) and Graziano (-18) are now 2nd and 3rd in the race for the Chase.

5th place Kyle Busch was picked by Chase Leader Asleep and Ideal.  Asleep still hanging on to the Chase lead.

6th Place Harvick was this week's most popular choice.  Rasta, Beef, Kiss, Rowdy, and Chonk all picked the #29 car.  Rasta actually losing a spot with this week... showing how stiff the competition is in this league.

Shepard took Pole Sitter and 7th Place Gordon, keeping him within reach on the Chase but will need some strong finishes in the last 5 races to factor into the "chip" distribution.

Kurt Busch (14th - Penguin), Dale Jr. (15th - Rusty), and Biffle (16th - Piston and Empty) were the bottom picks this week.  Still an okay points day, but with all of the other good picks this week these feel like BSOTW finishes for sure.

Talladega is this week and I have no idea who to pick.  Good thing for me is that I do not have a lot of choices, so it should be a rather short rock, paper, scissors tournament for the rest of the year.

Good luck this weekend teams and try to avoid "The BSOTW One" or as they have to say on TV "The Big One".

Kansas Results... Harvick Dominates... Kenseth Disappoints??

For me this race was tough to watch... they have got to do something about the tire/track combination in Kansas... Whatever the F... that means!?!?  Caution after caution after caution for the same thing.  JC!!  Someone please explain how they can not get this right for a particular track.  Don't they practice or use that track at all when NASCAR is not in town?  I'm probably waaay off here as usual, but I am trying to understand.

Okay... enough about that.  Let's get to it.

Harvick was the genius pick of the week by Kiss, Asleep, and Piston, giving Asleep and Piston wins two weeks in a row.  Asleep now has 3 wins out of the 4 Chase Races and has opened up a 10 point lead in the Chase over 2nd Place Chaser Piston.

The next best pick was 5th place Edwards by Dust, Shepard, and Penguin.  Giving me a little breathing room out in the lead.

Rusty took Jr. 8th, and 7 Teams took race favorite Kenseth who finished 11th  and struggled all night with that car.

BSOTWs were Empty (Keselowski 17th), Ideal (Hamlin 23rd), and Rowdy (Daniky 30th... Oops.. I mean Stenhouse Jr.).

No changes in the top 8 spots this week and a little shuffling from 9th to 14th.  With 6 races left is this a 5 team race?  Or can Empty or Piston make a run?

The Chase is obviously closer, but from how far back can someone come to take the lead?

A little BSOTW action from the top spots would definitely make things interesting.

I guess we will see in the next month and a half... Charlotte on Saturday night this week.  Good luck everyone!

Cheers!

Johnson Dominates Dover... Jr. and Logano not too bad either...

It's easy to tell how knowledgeable this league is about NASCAR on a week like this where 7 of 16 teams pick the race winner:
Graziano
Beef
Dust
Asleep - Now the Chase Leader!!!
Piston
Shepard
Skid
Congrats to those teams!

6 of the 9 teams who didn't pick Johnson had already picked him twice in previous weeks.  Of those 3 who had Johnson available 2 teams took Jr in 2nd (Rowdy) and Logano in 3rd (Rasta).  I'm not sure what that says about me (7th place Kenseth)...  Not sure what or if I was thinking... I was definitely hoping for better than a 7th place finish by Kenseth...  Especially since I could have saved Kenseth... who has won the last two races at next week's track in Kansass... but I'm not bitching and I hope the NASCAR gods do not take it that way.

Empty and Ideal (who is in Buenos Aires for a couple of weeks) took Newman (8th).  I'm hoping Ideal runs into Andrea, my friend and favorite bartender in Argentina, and sends us a pic.  Hola bonita!!!  Aye caliente!!!

There were 2 BSOTW picks this week: 37th Place Keselowski; picked by Chonk, Pursuit, and Kiss and 35th Place Edwards by Rusty.  Both of these drivers looked strong at times during the race, but sheets will still need to be cleaned.

As for the league, the top 6 spots remain the same, but as I mentioned Asleep takes the Chase lead.

Good luck in Kansas this Sunday!

Johnsonfest in Dover

Just got back from Kitesurfing and about to watch... Good luck to all!

New Hampshire Results

Kenseth dominates again and no one picked him...  Kyle Busch 2nd again (Kiss and now 2nd place team Rasta picked him)... Penguin in the lead for another week picked 6th Place Jr. The rest of the picks finished 13th-17th; with the exception of BSOTW award winners Rusty and Shepard with their Kahne pick who finished 37th.

Off to the coast this weekend for a little Kitesurfing and a much needed break.  Good luck in Dover this week!

In the MUST BE NICE section of the post... I didn't have a chance to post these on Race Day, but Team Graziano (Left and Right) and Shepard (Center) were at the Patriots game on Sunday.

Chicago Results

This week was a tough race for the league, but obviously the Logano pickers felt it the most.  The rain at the start may have had a little impact on the outcome, but the rain during the middle was the toughest causing engine troubles for several teams.  Kenseth dominated, but had to rally to win the race.  My Busch pick looked strong all race, Harvick finished strong again from outta nowhere.  Johnson had to deal with a couple of bad pit stops but finished fine.  Gordon rallied from 1 lap down to get a Top 10 finish.  Keselowski was strong all day.  Kahne and Biffle looked good for a lot of the race but fell out of it towards the end.  All in all, I don't think the race gave us any insight to who will win the title this year, but Kenseth is off to a great start.

As for the league, it is still very close but I like the way it looks so far.  Skidmarks is back in the top 3 and Beef fell out with the Logano pick.  One thing of which I am certain... it will be very hard to get through the next 9 races without being a BSOTW.  The question is not if it will happen but when it will happen...

This week it'll be easy to do the top picks and the BSOTW's... Just see below.  Remember, it's 250 Chips this year for the Chase.  Or as we say in Texas, "Cheeeps".

Cheers!

Richmond Results

Hola Amigos Y Amigas!!! Como estas???

Well... the Chase is about to start; not without much controversy.  For the League... only 6 of the 1st 7 places shuffled; including another change at the top.  I would like much better to be in the top spot 10 weeks from now, but it has been pretty cool making it back up top from as low as 10th.

So that was 13 weeks ago at Pocono, but I was 66 points out of 1st.  The question I have is this: With 10 to go, how many teams are still in the hunt for one of the top 3 spots?  In years past, when I have started the Chase from back in the pack.  I went into a save my best drivers strategy mode going in and had a vision of taking the Chase and rising so high in the standings that I grab one of the money spots as well.  That never freaking happened for me, but it was definitely possible.  Still lots of time to go... what will happen this year?

The top pick this week was Gordon (8th) by Rasta, Rowdy and Piston.  Rasta moving up to 3rd and gaining 10 points on the #1 spot.  2nd was Harvick (11th) by Penguin... now in 1st for a brief moment.  Empty chose Montoya (16th) and Graziano and Kiss took Keselowski (17th).  I think this week was all about Chase positioning so I will not go much further into it... except to mention that Danica was chosen twice this year for the first time in League history by Shepard.  I think she will continue to improve in Nascar, so I think this trend will continue... and not only to save better drivers for the Chase.

Raise a glass to Casey who was Shepard's German Shepard and inspiration for his team name.  Cheers!

Richmond Drivers

About to watch now... been selling beer all day.  Wild Bunch Brewing is off and running... well crawling, but fresh IPA is pouring from taps in the Texas Hill Country.  I'll send some cool pics ASAP.

Good luck to all... especially Fat Penguin.  Please do not let me know that Harvick is already in the wall on the 3rd lap...

Atlanta Results - Are you ready for some Football?!?!?!?!?!?!?

We have one more race until the chase and there are still 13 teams within 100 points of 1st place... 11 races left... is it enough time to still be thinking about taking one of the top spots?  Or do you save that driver you wanted to start on Saturday night for the Chase???   I'm going to throw out a prediction that Shepard will be the top contender for the Chase... Danica is most likely a lock for his Richmond pick... could be the first time in my recollection of league history that a team has maxed out their Danica pick for the season.

Sorry... my A.D.D. just kicked in.

The race in Atlanta caused more movement in the standings... Beef stays on top... Penguin shook Skidmarks and Rasta out of the 2nd place spot, Skid down to 3rd and Rasta to 4th.

Top pick this week was Logano who finished 2nd - Kiss and Empty both jump up a spot.
3rd Place Truex Jr. was chosen by your commish... inching 2 points closer to 1st place and in eager anticipation of my BSOTW pick for Saturday.
Gordon finished 6th and was picked by Beef (still in 1st), Rusty (holding tight in 9th), and Skid (dropping to 3rd).
Dale Jr. finished 8th - Ideal moves up 1 into 10th.
Harvick finished 9th - Chonk actually picked Harvick, but I screwed up and gave him Gordon.  He is a man of integrity and quickly corrected me giving up 4 points.  Thanks Chonk!

BSOTWs (in order of most poo to least poo):
Rowdy chose Kahne for the 3rd time... I tried to tell her in time, but was unsuccessful.  He finished 36th anyway, but it still sucks.
Hamlin (38th) - Tough year for Denny.
Danica (21st) - I still see improvement each race plus this was a Shepard Chase strategy pick, so hard to call this a BSOTW pick.
Edwards (18th) who ran strong all race, but he had issues with Gordon that probably cost him the race.

Good luck in Richmond teams!  The game just started, so good luck in any football pools you are in as well.

Cheers!

RUH ROH!!!

I have to share a pick entry email from one of the weeks... not necessarily this week. (I'll keep it as Chonkfidential as possible)...

Entry sent prior to race by unnamed team:

Kurt Busch, #78

And if Kyle Busch wins, I will say that you f*cked it up and that I really chose him.  I mean, it's an easy mistake to make - Kurt looks like Kyle and 78 looks so similar to 18.  Anyone could screw it up…even a propeller-hat-spinning computer guy.  No offense.

Commish email reply:  So Vickers?

Unnamed Team day after race:  Correct.  Brian Vickers.

Good Times... It is truly awesome being commissioner of this league.  No offense taken at all.. I am a propeller hat kind of guy,,,

The year I got involved with the league (2006), I was a co-owner of Rusty Truck's team.. the year he won with very little or no help from me, but we won.  The next year, Fat Penguin was born... halfway through that year, when I knew I had no chance I started sending my picks into the then new commish Rusty Truck this way:

Fat Penguin weekly pick:

-----> F*ck it 24 - Jeff Gordon, -----> F*ck it 48 - Jimmie Johnson-----> F*ck it 15 - Clint Bowyer

and so on and so on... the idea was it didn't matter what I thought for the week, NASCAR would happen as it felt like it should happen.. even if Gordon should have won... NASCAR would do what it wanted and logic would get thrown out the window.  F*ck it.... that's why 9 months of frustration is a perfect name of the league.

Why Fat Penguin?
It's a redneck pick up line... you walk up to your target and say, "fat penguin"... she'll look at you funny, but that won't stop you as you repeat, "fat penguin'... she'll then say, "what is fat penguin???"  You then say, "I just wanted to say something that would break the ice."  A double shooter with a wink will pretty much seal the proverbial deal... you are welcome.... Rowdy, replace the she'll with a he'll and you're all set.  LOL!

Why did you pick your team name??? Send me the story and I'll try to share with the group as we go...

A small tribute to past champions... Where did some of these guys go??? Let's get them back if you are still in contact with them.  Redneck Racing... You're Just Not Good Enough... Under Par... Team 33... A- Game.... Luzr2win.... Awesome team names, but... Where the F*ck did you guys go???

Greg, Chris, Ray, Scott, Jeff, Gary, Jeff: cheers to you for being a Champion and still being here!

BACK TO THE FUTURE:

Don't look now, but the commish has risen into the 2nd place money spot for I'm sure a very brief moment... but I'll take it!!! The top three spots did not change otherwise... but 13 teams are less than 100 points out of first place.  A week ago there were 12 within 100, but the point is A LOT of TEAMS ARE STILL IN IT!!!  Rowdy was 120 out last week and 89 points out this week.. 30ish point swing mfers!!!  Save your drivers for the Chase or go balls to the wall early to try to make up spots and get back into the mix??? Decisions, Decisions... Whatever your strategy... Good luck to all... especially Fat Penguin.
